Mental illnesses are diseases of the brain. They result from disorderly brain connections, imbalance in  brain chemicals, abnormal genes, traumatic early life experiences, inadequate coping mechanisms, maladaptive personality traits and unhealthy habits. Psychiatry is a branch of science that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of Mental illness. Mental illness can affect anyone irrespective of caste, creed, economic status, color or education. Nor it is due to any faults in parenting, upbringing, failures or loses.

Madness is just one category of Severe Psychiatric illness that affects less than 1 % of the population. Hence most patients who need Psychiatric care are not lunatics, they are ordinary human beings caught in difficult life situations, intense emotions, addicting habits, uncontrollable thoughts or unmanageable anxiety. They face problems in ordinary every day activities and interpersonal relationships.

Managing a psychiatric illness involves detailed evaluation of symptoms, lab investigations (if necessary) and treatment with drugs or psychotherapy. Treatment is definite, effective, long lasting and with out any major side effects. Hence early identification, complete evaluation and appropriate treatment are essential in Psychiatry.

Positive mental health aims at improving individual talents, assertiveness, relationships, satisfaction and quality of life. Corporate mental health aims at harmonious working relationships, comfortable environment, increased productivity and enhanced job satisfaction. Educational (school) mental health refers to the treatment of school phobia, exam panic, A.D.H.D and slow achievers.
